Anthony Lane, New Yorker
The third outing for a herd of toys that should have stayed in their boxes.
-
Christopher Orr, The Atlantic
Despite its manifest improvements, there is something so sour and unpleasant about the new film that it left me almost nostalgic for the innocent idiocies of its predecessor.
-
John Anderson, Wall Street Journal
At 157 minutes, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" isn't just a movie. It's a sentence.
-
Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine
For good or ill, Bay is the soul of a new machine, the poet of post-human cinema, the CEO of Hollywood's military-entertainment complex.
-
Dana Stevens, Slate
Marveling at its grotesque gigantism doesn't make this two-and-a-half-hour-long movie any less dull.
-
Michael Wilmington, Chicago Reader
If you're going to make a movie in which some of your stars are animated toys and much of downtown Chicago is reduced to rubble, this is the way to do it: shamelessly, with no expense spared and no cliche avoided.
-
Peter Canavese, Groucho Reviews
Intensely juvenile, casually sexist, and blatantly stupid in ways that few if any over the age of "T for Teen" or bereft of a Y chromosome could enjoy. [3D Blu-ray]
-
R. L. Shaffer, IGN DVD
Remarkable action set pieces and stunning effects, but this third outing of Transformers is sometimes just as clunky and irritating as the second.
-
Dave Bradley, SFX Magazine
This is Michael Bay back on form... although, alas, that's a phrase destined to make more sensitive cinephiles gag.
-
Bruce Bennett, Spectrum (St. George, Utah)
Loud and long, this 3rd installment boasts a better plot and impressive CGI while maintaining its juvenile level of comedy - the target audience will likely love it.
-
Sean Axmaker, MSN.com
You either take it on faith that the succession of scenes and exposition actually add up to a story and enjoy the ride, or sink 2 1/2 hours into the most expensive abstract disaster film ever made.
-
John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
There's only so much you can do with a toy. (Blu-ray Combo edition)
-
John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
...it takes a certain talent to create as much action as Bay does without generating an ounce of excitement.
-
Lisa Ann Cockrel, Christianity Today
Transformers 3 is the archetype of a summer blockbuster-all explosions and chest-swelling bravado and snarky sidekicks and big guns and hot chicks and hero shots.
-
Wesley Lovell, Oscar Guy
Better than the second film in the franchise, this film is still as hollow and unimportant as its predecessor.
-
James Kendrick, Q Network Film Desk
Michael Bay's latest adolescent fantasy for grown men is a moderate improvement over both of its predecessors, which is about the best thing it has going for it.
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
The Transformers series comes to a merciful close with this hopelessly anticlimactic installment that is, as expected, just as underwhelming and unwatchable as its predecessors...
-
Kevin A. Ranson, MovieCrypt.com
Once the film stops trying to endear you to Shia's employment and girlfriend problems, the meaningless destruction and mayhem does have a measure of entertainment value.

A third transformers makes life better, well done to Micheal Bay. Strong action sequences and some powerful scenery makes you forget that Megan Fox left. -

Let me get this out of the way, I've hated every single Transformers movie. The franchise has built its identity through the spectacular visuals and action it has. Dark of the Moon is not much different; literally, everything is shot and planned to be a treat for the eyes. Doesn't sound bad but when the movie has a horrible screenplay, bad pacing, sourly unappealing humor, and a no-namer casted just for her looks, it destroys the movie. I've gotta admit: The action is intense and well shot; Michael Bay has always had a good eye for action (cause he's been doing it his whole damn life). Even looking at this movie from strictly a B-movie standpoint, it fails to deliver entertainment throughout the movie. What I will say though is that Dark of the Moon is the best of the 3. The action is much easier to follow and is much more entertaining. Plus, it isn't as forgettable as Revenge of the Fallen. -

Why does everyone buy into this loud, annoying head banging drivel. Megan Fox and Shial laBeouf are not good actors. Plain and Simple. Neither is her replacement. Plain and Simple. Robots fighting robots isn't a coherent plot. Plain and friggin simple. I would definetely compare Dark of the Moon easily to Pirates of the Caribbean 4. What Pirates and Transformers have in common is that they are both never ending franchises and their films are made, or should I say designed as if they were brought to life on mechanical conveyer belts. The reason why this movie is similar to Pirates 4 is because it attempts to create a storyline but fails miserably because of a simple run out of ideas to follow it's predecessors. Which is then replaced by ungodly, noisy and annoying action sequences that go on from here to China. Pirates 3 was just an unethically long pile of crap. Transformers 2 was just as bad. Transformers 3 much like Pirates 4 with its predecessor. Better...but still so bad. -

My husband enjoyed the action of it all...me not so much. I could not tell the difference between the good machines, and the bad in the battle scenes for the most part. Too much of that for me, I guess. I am disappointed. -

This is the third, and (let's hope) final film in the live-action Transformers series. I mean, sure, the Transformers are cool, but I can only take or want so much of this stuff, and this isn't really great cinema, even for loud, expensive, action spectacle standards. As far as movies that are loud, stupid, and annoying go, this one ranks pretty high. The story this time is yet again centered around the Autobots and Decepticons duking it out for control of a a mystical device that has the power to destroy Earth as we know it. Enough already. Isn't there any other sort of plot they can come up with for these movies? Oh yeah, and once again mankind gets thrown in the middle, with the government playing another crucial role involving coverups and secrets, and that sort of thing. This time however, the Apollo 11 moon landing is involved, and the great Buzz Aldrin does his legacy no favors by making a brief appearance. Here's the thing about this movie: I think I kinda like it more than the second (which isn't saying much), but even then, the movie still finds a way to be the longest entry and still be guilty of some of the same crimes, even though it slightly downplays them. What I mean is, the film is unnecessarily long ,and filled with way too much filler. If all of the stuff going on during the first 90 minutes (primarily the stuff just involving the human characters) were heavily condensed to just bullet points and heavily trimmed up, I'd be a lot happier. There's no reason for this, or the other two films to be somewhere near the 150 minutes mark. Unless of course the exposition is actually good stuff and well done, but that's not really the case. Also, the plots are just ridiculous, and the humans aren't really that necessary. At least Bay gives limited screen time to Sam's parents. They're still painfully dull and unfunny, but at least they're hardly in it. That goes for the rest of the unfunny comic relief. It seems like there is less of it this time around, but even then, it still sucks and is unnecessary. Especially the stuff involving Ken Jeong. He should know better. So should Malkovich. And McDormand. Although I kinda wanna give her a pass because she does have one or two moments I sorta liked, but still. It's painful seeing her waste her time here. Even Turturro who I don't mind giving a pass to seems even less necessary here than before. It's like they felt it wouldn't be the same without him, and that's just dumb. I don't feel like Megan Fox really added much to the first two other than some wooden acting and sex appeal, but it's really saying something when I prefer her to her replacement this time around: Little Miss Surprised Duckface, I mean Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Having a love interest for Sam isn't necessary either, so why the hell is she here? Why is most of the crap in these movies here? The racist autobot twins Skids and Mudflap are gone, which is nice, but are replaced by a Joe Pesci-esque bot and a Beavisish bot, and that's not much better. Also, why are the NASCAR autobots given Scottish accents? Sure, southern accents would be more obvious, but those would at least make sense. Also, I'm fine with Nimoy voicing Sentinel Prime, but those Star Trek references, especially one of the greatest lines ever, did not need to be egregiously forced in. The movie does do some stuff right, I will give it that. I mean, I am giving it 2 stars. From technical and effects standpoints, yes, the film is top notch, and it's impressive work. But some of the action is still messily edited. I didn't see it in 3D, but at least the film was bright, so that probably helped makes the 3D work halfway decently. There's one great dramatic moment that really showed the filmmaker displaying some balls, and it actually got me caring and invested in the movie, but of course, it's too good to be true and they ultimately pussy out with the sort of twist that makes forgiving audiences go wild when the reveal happens, so that doesn't help, but at least they started doing something good. At least he film does start to cut the crap and devote the last hour or so to balls out acton, but even that gets boring and stale fairly quickly, and the words boring and stale should not come up when duscussing constant scenes of explosions, massive urban destruction, and giant alien robots fighting one another. I shouldn't get bored dur ing a movie like this, but I did, and that's one of the biggest sins a film can commit in my eyes. I'll be hoenst and say i did enjoy the location shooting, and some of the action, but with no heart and soul, it's hard to care about anything in this movie. It didn't seem quite as excessive as the second, but maybe because it's still fresh in my mind. Regardless, you should just skip this one and pray that if another damn movie shoudl be made that whoever helms it will learn some restraint, subtlety, and nuance...even for a film about Transformers. Oh yeah, I didn't even mention the sexism, misogyny, jingoism, and racial stereotypes (without Skids and Mudflap). I don't have the strength to go into it right now. Just know that's it all there, and that the core audience will probably sadly just overlook it because hey, explosions! hot girl! cars! -

Shia LaBeouf was quoted as saying that 'We dropped the ball on the last one, next time we're really upping our game'. So now he's a liar as well as an annoying actor. I have referred to Megan Fox as a blow-up doll before but Rosie Huntington-Whiteley surpasses her dramatically. If you pause any of her scenes, look close and you can see a valve sticking out of her neck with a tiny 'Keep away from naked flames' label attached. So again, all women are portrayed as sex objects - or are they? No, Frances McDormand has joined the cast to smash any misconceptions that these films are sexist - Mrs McDormand plays a nagging headmistress type instead, so pats on the back all round there. Seriously though, Frances McDormand what are you doing? John Turturro what are you doing? John Malkovich what are you doing? Getting paid very well I hope! Ok, so here is something I liked about the movie. I liked the whole moon story and getting Buzz Aldrin to play himself was a great move. I also liked Leonard Nimoy as the voice of Sentinel Prime although the Star Trek puns wore very thin very quickly. I hated everything else but then it's pretty much the same as the two previous films and I hated them also. -

Dark of the Moon is an over- long, loud, flashy movie that gave me a headache and left me feeling nothing. -

Transformers Dark of the Moon was a very face paced action film, but has nothing else to call itself. This story tells us the Apollo mission that had the first man on the moon, was actually a cover up to discover what landed on the dark side of the moon, which could change the Transformers war forever, another Prime named Sentinal Prime. Sam Witwicky (Shia Lebeof) is living with his girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington Whitely) and is trying to find a job. Optumus Prime and the other Transformers help out on earth but still seacrch for signs of Decepticons. Sam finds a job with a quirky boss (John Malkovich) and meets Carlys suave and rich boss Dylan (Patrick Dempsey). Dylan is attracted to Carly, and Sam knows it and starts to resent the guy. When Optimus discover they have been hiding Sentinal Prime for years, he is angry, and demands he be awakened because he can help win the war. When a man at work tells Sam of the Apollo mission, he must return to his old life of helping in the war with the Decepticons. When Sentinal tells them of a secret on the moon that can teleport Deceptiocns, he tricks them into setting up teleporters called the bridge. Sentinal betrays us for the Decepticons and Megatron and unleashes thousands of Decepticons into Earth. Now its up to human and Autobots to destroy the bridge and stop the Deceptiocns, if we can stop them. Where do I begin with this film, first of all the plot is a complete disaster, there is a whole part about Sam getting a job after college that has absoloutely nothing to do with the story, its just another crappy Transformers beginning, then they add a Victoria Secret model to be in this movie which was really retarded, its like there just trying to get nerds to come to this just for the hot girl and nothing else, then the plot turns for the worst when it just keeps getting more and more ridiculous and it just proves Micheal Bay can't make a decnt story except with the original Transformers and The Island. Only about half of these Transformers look cool, I mean thank you for getting rid of the Gangster autobots, but now they have a Autobot named Que, who actually resembles Albert Einstein, it was one of the dumbest looking things ive ever seen, and I even saw Sentinal Prime have like metal chin braids on him, WTF he has no hair how can he have braids? The music was a positive thing about the movie, it was very good and stuck with the previous scores, but at some of the weirdest moments in the film they started playing rock songs, me and my bro were laughing at how stupid that was. I loved the effects like everyone else, even if the effects created some of the studiest looking Transformers ever, except for Optimus and Bumble Bee, they still look cool, and I will admit it, Sentinal Prime still looked awesome. The action was cool, but this is Transformers, the whole reason I came was the action that never fails, even if it gets so weird Shia Lebeof can live through anything. The acting was just as bad as the plot, first of all Shia can't do anything right in this movie, Patrick Dempsey should stich with crap like Greys Anatomy, and Rosie Whitely was just a horny Micheal Bay wanting a hot star because Spielberg made him fire Megan Fox. Micheal Bay is the king of crappy blockbuster entertainment, and that's not something I dont think he should be proud of. Although it was better then the second, Transformers Dark of the Moon was a pathetic threequel and I hope they end the series soon because Shia Lebeof quit for the next one and I know why, because he realizes his career is being ruined by them -

I really wanted to like this movie. I'm not sure why I thought I would, I really despised the first sequel. The third chapter isn't much of an improvement. These movies spend way too much time following the lives of a bunch of stupid, phony, and annoying assholes. I hate every human character in the film, they should all have their brains bashed in. The movie should focus on the machines, but the writers obviously aren't competent enough to pull that off. Outside of Megatron, Sentinel, Optimus, and Bumblebee, the rest of the machines are basically interchangeable. It makes for a jumbled mess. There are some scenes that are cool because they're big and loud. But I've seen "big and loud" done better too. This is dumb ass shit. Avoid. -

Third time's a charm. This trilogy has gotten so much crap ever since the sequel came out. Probabaly even before that when Michael Bay was announced as the director for the 2007 summer blockbuster. Either way, I kept thinking once I finally got down to watching this installment "Why do these movies get such crap?" Transformers is a beloved franchise of toys and cartoons and celebrated for the mythology behind it all. I had a hazy memory of the past two films yet didn't have any interest in seeing this one simply because of the lashing the series has gotten. If I thought about it really hard I don't think that there was anything too ridiculous or horrid about Transformers 1 and 2. But that's just it. Thinking about it and seeing it are completely different fields. I always find myself hyping up a movie more from just memories to the point that it is totally an over-the-top praise to how the movie really is if I were to see it again. I've seen these movies only once a piece and haven't revisited them nor plan to. Michael Bay is notorious for his films' paper-thin storylines and abusive use of special effect disasters. He's been compared to Roland Emmerich as the America's Director of Disaster. I wouldn't say Michael Bay is among the worst filmmakers of today. Just that his style is all visuals and no substance. Other than that I'm still scratching my head over why people hate him so much. Don't the brain-dead, average movie-goers of today thrive off of just this? Michael Bay is not a bad director. He got his start in the early nineties making music videos so he is a visual director. But visuals alone can seriously hurt a film. For some odd reason James Cameron gets more attention with his visuals and applauded for them when he suffers from the same thing as Bay. It's just visuals. What I don't understand is why so many people complained about how bad Transformers 3 was before even seeing it and went and saw it anyway. No one likes to admit they enjoyed themselves during any of the movies because some higher power told us Transformers sucks now. If it's not the sheer guilty pleasure that brings the people back for more it's something much more contagious--Sequelitis. Sequelitis is what keeps us coming back movie after movie for the same crap as the last time. Sequelitis is our comfort zone--our initial thought that we can stand another one of these bad films because we are familiar with the characters and situations so we don't have to think about this next one with a blank slate and just a little bit curious what will happen now. A movie doesn't have to present itself as being a potential work of art either to get attention. All a movie needs is enough energy to keep an audience alive. With that out of the way, this is... Transformers: Dark of the Moon. A movie that got so hyped up purely because it's giant robots fighting around explosions. And like I said before, movie goers today eat that stuff up. -

while much better than the second film, this third installment reaches nowhere near the first and mostly serves to accentuate the massive flaws that now encapsulate the entire trilogy. the character development was as bad as it gets, the action sequences thrilling at moments but confusing at others, and the overall narrative was treated with major indifference. in the end, optimus never really lived up to what he should have been, many of the robots of the franchise were mishandled, and the trilogy ended poorly in the final scenes. this third film did provide some excellent moments and i had fun at the movies with this one, but i'll also always remember as much about what could have been as i will of what was. -

An improvement on its predecessor, but still can't find that innocent sense of fun that the original movie managed to accomplish. The problem with this film and the second one is that they tried to do something with the story that's somewhat complicated to understand unless you are a hardcore fan of the Transformers and know all the mythology. Otherwise, you can barely understand a thing of what is going on. Even though I loved Transformers as a kid, I don't remember much and these last two movies have confused me to the point where I don't care about the story. When that happens all that is left is cool special effects and pointless action close ups of Transformers that you can barely tell apart when they are fighting. This one wasn't as incomprehensible as the last one and Michael Bay did away with some of the trashy aspects that plagued the second, but this movie was still far too long and had spots with way too much talking about crap no one really cares about. The human characters have always been secondary, but they have never been less important than they are in this one. That would be fine if he didn't spend running time giving them scenes like Shia talking to his parents about love... come on now. -

Transformers has some great action scenes, nobody will question that. The problem is that there isn't enough driving or robot on robot action that made the first great. I like Shia Lebouf and he is good in this installment as well. The comedy works much better then Revenge of the Fallen as well, i could have done without the two small robots but the human characters were genuinely funny and had some scenes with Ken Jeong were better then many youll find in this years comedys. The final battle was what the whole movie was building up to, but there needed to be action partway to break it up and there wasnt. The Autobots and Decepticons are both great characters but the enemy in this one was more just grey ships. I wanted robot on robot not these flying ships that shoot lasers and dont transform. Regardless its a fitting end (possibly?) to the series. It had explosions but needed more of the fighting action that made the climax of the original so entertaining. -

Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey, Kevin Dunn, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Hugo Weaving, Ken Jeong Director: Michael Bay Summary: The third installment in Michael Bay's trilogy travels back to 1969's historic moon landing, when Neil Armstrong and his Apollo 11 cohorts touch down in the Sea of Tranquility ... and discover what appears to be a downed Transformers craft. Flash forward to the present, and the Decepticons are ready to exact revenge on Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots. Shia LaBeouf returns as Sam Witwicky, the Autobots' human ally. My Thoughts: "Great action just like the last two. Less comedy which really didn't seem to make a difference. New Robot's which was interesting. A lot of the old cast was back and they were great once again. Some new blood was added like Patrick Dempsey. I thought he was OK, but I really didn't find him so threatening. Then the great John Malkovich, he's amazing in any role no matter how small the part. Also Frances McDormand who really brought some fierceness to the film. I really thought she was a great addition to the movie. The very funny Ken Jeong was no surprise hilarious in his short lived role. Then lastly Rosie Huntington-Whitley. All I know of her is she is a model and a worse actress then Megan Fox. I won't lie, I missed Megan in this movie, but I also think the film could have done without all the boy must save girl and be a hero bs. It just felt forced and the film would have done well without it. But no matter what I am a fan of the films and they do what they were made to do, and that is entertain and this film doesn't disappoint. I still think the first film is the best."
