Long ago, on the planet of Cybertron, a massive, powerful alien race divided into two factions, the noble Autobots, and the devious Decepticons. They fought for the sole access to a talisman known as the Allspark, a cube with the capacity to grant infinite power, and eventually the Autobots smuggled it off the planet's surface, hiding it in an unknown location on Earth. Now, hundreds of years later, the Deceptacons have come looking for it, and if the Autobots don't find it first, the Earth will be enslaved or destroyed by the evil aliens' use of its massive power. The Autobots don't know where the cube was hidden, but the information may be stored in the most unlikely of sources, as a gangly young Earthling named Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) who's just picked up his first car, has a strange connection to the Allspark's history, making him the unlikely ally of these enormous creatures, as they fight for humankind's survival and the chance to return home. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

For the bot-neutral rest of us, two-and-a-half hours of mostly incoherent special effects may be a bit much.

Kyle Smith, New York Post
I challenge you to name another movie about an alien robot come to save the world while disguised as a yellow Camaro. Isn't it just an intergalactic Herbie the Love Bug?
-
Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
It's a big, cool, dopey, noisy, non-stop action powerhouse. It's also too long by a half hour and it left my ears ringing, but it's a lot of fun.
-
Rex Reed, New York Observer
With Transformers, director Michael Bay has once again claimed the year's top honors for loud, stupid filmmaking.
-
David Germain, Associated Press
The action sequences are so turgid it's sometimes hard to tell which 'bot is doing what, but with Bay steadily hurling fireworks you won't really pause much to think about that, or about how truly inane the story is.
-
Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader
Not a movie, just one gigantic commercial for Hasbro.
-
Tony Delgado, Digital Spy
hat was delivered will no doubt send merchandising sales spiralling into orbit, but sadly at the cost of countless brain cells popping through after nearly two and a half hours of tedium.
-
Joshua Starnes, ComingSoon.net
Transformers delivers on its promise of stunning visuals and well-crafted action sequences, but it's not remotely worth the slog it takes to get there. Once the novelty of the robots wears off it's hopelessly insipid.

Dragan Antulov, Draxblog Movie Reviews
Bay, of course, can't resists temptation to use as many explosions in the film as possible

Fernando F. Croce, CinePassion
Morphs from Army-enlisting ad to toy ad (on its way passing through a panoply of car ads, computer ads, beer ads) without ever becoming a movie

Amy Nicholson, I.E. Weekly
Thank god the Transformers speak primarily in proper nouns--if they hadn't shouted "Optimus! Megatron!" every time they struck a blow, I'd have no idea what was happening.
-
Tony Macklin, Fayetteville Free Weekly
Transformers is a rollicking, rousing experience.

Jeff Bayer, The Scorecard Review
It is a teenage boy's wet dream. The girls are insanely hot, the lead is awkward/funny and the action sequences are top notch.

...if you are an adult and not already a fan, you may find the movie more than a bit long, loud, and frenzied.

Come to think of it, I was pretty stupid when I was six years old. So is this film.

Adam Tobias, Watertown Daily Times
Director Michael Bay's bigger than life version of the cartoon I grew up loving pretty much ruined one of my favorite childhood memories.

Toys come to life in big, boomy explosion fest.

Steve Biodrowski, ESplatter
Although it strives to appeal to the whole family, it winds up emerging as a kiddie flick on steroids - a big-budget, effects heavy, feature film version of a Saturday morning cartoon.

Transformers is the best action movie I have seen since The Matrix.

Oh man... another Michael Gay movie. Guess what it has? Explosions, helicopters flying, slow motion of eye candy (whether it may be the transformers or the useless Megan Fox herself). What a bore. The action was forgettable and the characters are uninspired. -

Michael Bay takes the helm for this big budget live-action adaptation of some of the coolest toys from my childhood. It's one race of robot aliens who can transform into various vehicles and things against another, and it's on Earth and humans get involved, and, despite being forced does try to make things a bit more emotional for the audience. I'd be happy if there were no humans in the movie, but if I really had my way, I'd also make the movie have as little CGI as possible. This is typcial Michael Bay stuff what with shallow characters, balls out action, tons of explosions, good doses of humor, and everything cranked up to 11. Some of the music is good, so that's a plus. There's some big names, and, even though a lot of them get wasted (Voight), the rest do slightly better than okay with what they're given to work with. There's some unnecessary padding, but there again, I had no creative control. Some of the CGI actually is alright though, and there's some decent amoutn of attention to detail there, so that helps. For what this film is though, it's done well. That doesn't mean it works well as a non-genre or non summer blockbuster type of film, but it's hardly the worst of its kind. -

The visuals are absolutely stunning, the filmmakers did a great job in bringing the Autobots and Decepticons to life. The action is fast, chaotic, and full of explosions. When watching Michael Bay film, the last thing anyone should ever expect is a good story. Bays movies are tailer made to be summer popcorn flicks. The films plot is easy to understand but falls apart when subjected to repeat viewings. Some of the humor is fine although it can get a little annoying at times. One may be disappointed in the fact that the film is not really about the Transformers, instead the human characters take center-stage. This would not be a problem is it wasn't for bad dialogue and bad acting. It is film elements like these that make Transformers a great visual effects show, but a very empty film. -

Michael Bay does make the most of CG, but Transformers never delivers where it should; the story.

When a film lacks a strong story, it is safe to say that 2 hours and 20 minutes of screen time is probably excessive. It is here. Transformers tries to fill the void with humor along the way, and it does have it's moments, but there are times where it tries too hard to be funny when it doesn't have to.
As mentioned earlier, the CG and action is where this picture impresses. So much so, that everything else is overshadowed, although they would have been overshadowed with just mediocre CG and action anyway.

The human characters are just there. Nothing to care about. It is the transformers that are the ones to care for. Shia LaBeouf, the beautiful Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, and all the other recognizable faces end up in the back seat behind characters that don't require any acting for. This is a shame.

Despite it's lackluster story and human characters, Transformers is worth a gander because of it's CG renderings. That is it.
-

If just based on action it would get 5 stars, but because of it's basic plot and sub-par acting......3.5 stars. -

I will go out to say that, a rather long time ago in another life time, I was somewhat interested in Transformers. I mean, what young boy at that time was not? Giant robots that beaten the crap out of each other? Well, overtime I grew out of that and as such, I found not one aspect of interest. Back in 2007 when this film came out, I still was not sold on it. When I first saw this film, I did think the effects were good, but that was it. Now going back and watching this film with the knowledge of films that I have, I realized that my original idea of the film still stands. Okay, this is going to be a short review so I apologize, but I have very little to say about this movie. For the direction, this film proves one thing: Michael Bay can not direct films. Yes, I do have a soft spot for him due to him directing the music videos that Meat Loaf was in, but for films, he can not. Okay, I will say that he can direct special effects and make them look pleasing to the eye. but other then that, he just can't. He can not have the actors act, he goes for the visual aspect, and he just makes the film loud and obnoxious. For acting, this film is terrible at it. Alright, I understand that the point of this film is to watch Robots beat the crap out of each other, but it would not kill anyone just to give a convincing performance so that we, the audience, can actually care about the characters! Now, Shia LaBeouf can, at times, be a terrific actor due to his performances in Holes, Even Stevens, and later on Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. But here, he just acts like he does not care. In his mind, he knew that kids and teenagers who do not know the difference between a good film and a bad film will cash money just to see things explode. But, his acting is not all that is bad. The only person who is worse in this film is the now famous Megan Fox. All I will say is that she has no purpose in being in this film. The only reason why she is in here is just for the sex appeal and to attract an audience of teenage/ collage boys to sit down and stare at her as she gives a stale performance but flaunts her body every which way. My advice for her would be to go back to acting school or take real acting lessons so that you can, at least, be worth the time of people who actually want to see acting. Next the script. It is nothing special. It is just tasteless dialogue, horribly written with only one thing in mind: promote the toys and make money. Yeah, that is what this film is: a propaganda film to have toys distributed. Well, like most of the time, this film fails. Finally, the last and only good part of this film, the score. Now, with music, I like it when a film has a great, epic score that just fits the film. While this film is a piece of crap, at least the score does redeem the film a little bit. Only thing I would have liked would be if there was a rendition of that classic Transformers theme that used to be on the shows. Overall, this film is great for the eyes (and sexual fantasies of twelve year old boys), but is not worth your time to watch. -

Since seeing Transformers Dark of the Moon, people have asked me to do a review on the other two films so ill start with the first. definitely one of the best action movies made, the effects are spectacular and breathtaking to look at, and with Peter Cullen back as Optimus Prime (the original voice of Prime) It just makes this action film all the better. Many people I know have complained about how, in the final, I dont know, 45 minutes with the whole city fight, everyone was complaining about how, like, "I can't tell who's who," "Who am I rooting for." I hear those complaints all the time about this film, and to me, I really didn't have a problem with it, after sitting through 2 hours of this I was pretty used to what each Autobot and Decepticon looked like. For instance, for the Autobots, i could tell it was prime because, everyone knows he's a Semi, but I also knew it was him from the voice and his colors, or say for the decepticons, I knew it was Starscream because of how he is a jet and has jet wings on his back, or Blackout, because he had helicopter propellers on his back, so I didn't have trouble with it. Another complaint I hear with this movie is that, the human scenes and characters are stupid and nobody watches a Transformers movie to watch the humans, personally I didn't mind them. I thought Shia Laboeuf was good, and Anthony Daniels, they were all great funny characters. All I have really left to say is that, the only problem I have with this movie is the police droid Barricade, You see him clearly in the city fight, but he vanishes after they show him driving into the city, and there are no deleted scenes on the DVD, so I have no clue what happened to him, and he isn't in the second film either, he makes a brief cameo in Dark of the Moon, but then he vanishes again just after his leg is shot off. With Starscream they give an explanation that he flew off into space they even show that in the credits, but Barricade just vanishes. But overall this is my 5th favorite film of all time. -

As a child, I played with many toys, but none more than the Ninja Turtles and Transformers. So to see the Hasbro robots in disguise as a live action film brings nostalgia to my ears!! Now, while I know there will be tons of people who will criticize this film because it isn't accurate or the story has no depth to it, I'm not apt to agree with them because the movie is based on freaking toys. Transformers is not supposed to be Batman Begins. Two hours of big robot fights is what I'm paying to see and who better to deliver that than Michael Bay? Yes, Michael Bay has no idea how to tell a story, or at least he's too preoccupied with other things. We don't want him making Pearl Harbor. But Transformers? Absolutely! Basically, the plot makes sure to set up the conflict - Autobots versus the Decepticons, who want to enslave the universe. It fits likeable humans into the equation, and that's it. When things aren't blowing up, Bay keeps you entertained by having the actors banter through comedic scenes, many of which work really well. Consider a scene where main character Sam is looking for a pair of glasses crucial to the plot. The entire scene is the Transformers trying to hide from Sam's parents, and Sam's parents bantering with their son in a manner that keeps the laughs coming. He casually finds the glasses in the next scene, right on the dining table in plain sight. The necessary element to the plot takes five seconds, the comedy over five minutes. And I'm not complaining because it's a movie about gigantic robots fighting other gigantic robots, and they all can turn into cars - GM cars at that (this movie does not conceal product placement). I'm not expecting anything more than a well crafted B movie with lots of explosions and car chases, and this movie delivers 144 minutes worth! -

This was actually a great action flick! It had its lows too (jerking camera, cheesy romance sub-plot, etc) but was a great introduction to the world of Autobots and Deceptacons to the big screen. Worth the watch. -

What a cool movie, I liked it a lot, but the teenaged acting from Fox and Lebeof couldve been better. Transformers is about two alien races called Autobots and Decepticons that are an all out war of good vs. evil. When there planet of Cybertron is destroyed, a object called the alspark crashes on earth and it is a very powerful weapon that could effect there war. Sam Witwicky (Shia Lebeof) is in high school and just bought a junky yellow car for his birthday. He is in love with Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) and they start to hang out. When his car is driven away, he follows it and sees it transform into an autobot and fight off some decepticons. Sergeant Lennox (Josh Duhamel) is a marine who is days from being discahrged, and soon the base is brutally attacked by a decepticon, and he and a few men survive. It is up to Sam, Mikaela, Lennox, and the autobot race including the powerful and wise leader Optimus Prime to destroy the Decepticons and find the Alspark. Effects were tremendous, the plot stuck with the franchise, and this is one of the two Micheal Bay films I like. Effects were so trememndous and beautiful that I couldn't believe human made it, oh wait they're aliens, but seriously these are some great ass effects. I was in love with the music and it really got my pulse going. This was a great movie. -

It's about as good as you're going to get when it comes to an animated TV Show adaptation. I've never really appreciated how much ground this first movie covers. It has a giant cast of characters, but somehow manages to give each person enough time to move around and not just exist as a plot extension. Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox work well together and represent the heart of the story. Even if you don't find yourself interested in the alien battle between Autobots and Decepticons, it's hard not to relate to a simple love story. This takes all the essential elements from the Transformers universe and carries it into this very tight fitting story. All of the best characters are present as well as the core concept that just never gets tiring. Optimus Prime gets all of the glory with his trademark one-liners and fighting skills. However, I feel like Bumblebee was definitely the most well written and lovable part of this movie. Megatron was definitely handled in the best way and seen as the agent of chaos that he is; backed up by his loyal servant Starscream. I really like the sense of getting an idea of the story, but never being bombarded with exposition and too many characters. Regardless of how each person feels about Michael Bay and his style, he knows how to give you a truly beautiful looking movie. The action is unmatched and captures what made Transformers such a cool TV show. Destruction occurs at every corner, bordering on chaotic for some, but this is made to be a big budget extravaganza of explosions and unbelievable stunts. In the end, everyone should know what they're getting into when they see this; it's incredibly obvious. In my opinion, it's way too fun to hate. This doesn't attempt to bridge drama, sci-fi and action into a highly respectable and adult movie. It's made for fans and people who enjoy movies on other levels than just slow paced period pieces. -

Just because a robot race comes down from another planet doe snot mean it has to be bad, and in this case it's an amazing, exhilarating story of courage and survival. Never in my life would I have thought I would love watching robots beat the crap out of each other. This has got to be one of the best efforts of brining an old television show to life. Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox lead this movie to stardom, with an exceptional performance of rising star Shia. Wonderful from start to finish! -

Oh dear oh dear...this must be the perfect example of a modern day film and how bad they can be with the dreaded cgi monster. Where to begin! first off using Bay as director was probably the worst decision made when this film was being created, the man can make good action flicks yes but this sci-fi cartoon creation of epic proportions was not meant to be like this. The film is a mess from start to finish with loud noises and visuals that make no sense to the naked eye, yes it all looks very pretty shiny and flashy but you have no idea where the Transformers begin and where they end. I wasn't expecting an amazing plot nor was I expecting an adult based film, even though the original cartoon was actually quite dark in places and we all knew it would be hard to translate the robots to the big screen, but at the end of the day as an old fan of the original cartoon and toy line I hated how they made the Transformers look in this film. Only 'Prime' and 'Bumblebee' actually looked visually pleasing as all the other robots were practically indecipherable, a huge maze of shiny moving parts which I couldn't tell if even a head was present! Yes the transformation sequences looked kinda neat but again I had no idea what was moving and where! a complete U-turn from the original cartoon where you could actually see how the robots transformed. I just hate how only Prime looks like the original concepts, I understand they updated the robots but the fact hardly any of them resembled their original designs killed me, for some reason all the Decepticons were very pointy and had spikes, why? also I noticed every vehicle was a US vehicle, a good example of how Bay and Hollywood totally 'transformed' this cool franchise into what they wanted. Bumblebee an ugly looking Camaro!? and what the hell did they do to 'Megatron' and 'Frenzy'!? :( So apart from the mass of in your face cgi what else is there? what is left if you take away the effects? nothing, the film has nothing else to offer a tall. The acting is bad, B-movie bad, we're talking 'Godzilla' remake bad, John Turturro gave me some smiles but apart from that this is 'Independence Day' acting right here, plenty of sappy 'jive talkin' and Fox looking like shes made out of plastic with her bright white teeth and ridiculous amounts of orange bodytan lol! Kids will enjoy this film I'm sure as they have probably not seen the original material, its loud, got lots of explosions and slow motion fighting, I myself cringe at how gaudy and terrible this trash is, the whole human side of the film is totally pointless! the real live actors are completely defunct and could literately be sidelined. Whilst the big robots are all fighting away in an orgy of shiny cgi nuts n bolts we get little snippets of the actors running around driving stuff and trying to look busy or like they're actually of any use haha then out of the blue one soldier manages to shoot and kill a Decepticon easy as pie! (had to do it from jumping off a moving motorbike for some reason). It all leads me to think they should of made a fully cgi animated film like the old 86 movie. Best thing about the film? they listened to the old school fans and got Cullen back to voice Prime, when Prime says 'sorry my bad' I put my face in my hands. No, quite simply no. -
